Lalas Creates Media Firestorm With Tweet
It was a simple gesture - or it should have been - when former US Mens Soccer Star and current Fox Sports Analyst Panayotis Alexander "Alexi" Lalas responded to a recent Indy City Futbol tweet.
I'm here for you.— Alexi Lalas (@AlexiLalas) June 14, 2017
But Lalas apparently overlooked the scandal the League has been embroiled in this year. In May, the League was found to have been diverting funds from previous registrations, donations and sponsorships into a program providing brand new soccer goals to a local neighborhood park.
“It’s shocking, really,” said fellow Fox Sports Analyst Kate Abdo “Lex really should know better than to dip his toes into that mess.”
When asked for comment, League’s Commissioner @jordanupdike responded sharply: “Look, I don’t know why you guys won’t let this go. The controversy about donating goals for neighborhood kids is over. It happened, we dealt with it, now let’s move on.”
Lalas’ US Mens Soccer teammate Cobi Jones had no opinion on the matter. Cornered in a New York bar, he shouted “I’M NOT TALKING ABOUT ALEXI LALAS. THAT ASSHOLE OWES ME SEVERAL HAIR TIES!”
It remains unclear what might happen to Lalas’ commentating job. Fox Sports did not comment, but is rumored to be distancing itself from the former superstar.
Even figures from other sports weighed into the controversy. American Football Coach Bill Belichek grumbled, “It’s unbelievable, really. That Alexi Lalas would be supporting a league that takes away focus from the game and supports neighborhoods, friendship, post-game parties, and bringing soccer to new neighborhoods and parks…I can’t wrap my head around it. Sickening. I demand an immediate apology.”
Lalas could not be reached for comment.
