Where Are They Now? An expose into the lives of former Indy City Futbollers
Where Are They Now?
After five seasons as central Indiana’s top neighborhood-based, amateur soccer league, Indy City Futbol’s players have become superstars; recognizable to dozens of people throughout the globe/flat-earth. Like every good awards show, we must acknowledge those who are no longer with us and share their stories of success and failure.
Jeff Bumgardner was a mainstay of Indy City Futbol’s first four seasons, playing for both FC Fountain Square and Real West. A leader both on and off the field, Bumgardner was promoted to Deputy Commissioner for the 2017 season and was instrumental in leading the league’s anti-doping and anti-bribery reforms. So, where’s Jeff plying his trade now?
Other futbollers haven’t been so lucky. Nathan D. Scruggs-Cruz had been on the fringes of Garfield Athletic’s squad for three years before being called up to the senior side in 2017.
“I’ve had my fair share of injuries and hangovers which prevented me from breaking into the first team,” said Cruz. “When I finally got the call-up, I was thrilled.”
Playing in front of the literal handful of fans proved too much for the young midfielder, who began habitually drinking at different bars after every game.
“In the end, the pressure of playing for a club of Garfield’s stature was too much,” he said. Unemployed and penniless, Scruggs-Cruz spends most days sneaking into Tappers Arcade to prove he still has the finesse to chip Peter Schmeichel from 40 yards in FIFA ’98.
